I Did Not Want to Have Surgery

When I had a herniated disc, my doctor wanted to try surgery first. I was not keen on this at all because I had heard too many horror stories about people having back surgery and never fully recovering from it. I asked him about alternatives, but he seemed to feel that surgery was the only option that would have the best success. Thankfully, I got a second opinion. The second doctor that I went to asked me if I had seen a chiropractor in San Francisco or had any kind of physical therapy to help me with my back pain.

When I told him that the first doctor had just wanted to do surgery right off the bat, he was professional about it but I could tell that he did not like that. Continue reading

I No Longer Feel Ancient

I had not been to a chiropractor since I was involved in a car accident when I was just a teenager. I only went because my parents made me go, but I admitted even then that the chiropractic treatments did make me feel much better. I guess I thought that because I was a senior football player, I was too tough to need something like that. Now that I am a few decades older, I have lost that teen cockiness. I knew that I needed to find a chiropractor in Phoenix soon because my quality of life just seemed to decrease with each passing year.

Granted, my kids think that I am ancient, but I knew that I was too young to be feeling as rough as I was. Continue reading

Chinese Medicine Antibiotics Will Become The Mainstream

The most serious antibiotic management policy of Chinese pharmaceutical industry is forthcoming. Some experts said, Chinese ministry of health focuses on fighting against abuse of clinical antibiotics, which undoubtedly provided an opportunity for the development of the relative safety of Chinese herbal antibacterial. Western medicine glutathione antibiotics provide opportunities for Chinese herbal medicine.
Shortened in recent years, drug resistance cycle as well as bacterial resistance rates to raise year by year, from the 1990s onwards, many large pharmaceutical companies to reduce capital investment, gradually withdraw from the research and development of antimicrobial drugs, new antibacterial drugs uncommon. Side by side with human beings in war with the bacteria, can be described as retreat, multi-drug resistant, pan-resistant bacteria emerging. Basing on this, the theme of 2011 world health day was identified as against resistance: no action is taken today, tomorrow will have no drugs available.
Antibacterial drugs of abuse, not only the patient’s medical costs soaring, but also brought about the serious consequences of the high resistance. The sole acinetobacter baumannii, for example, the resistance rate of 3 percent in 2007, 11 percent in 2008, 17 percent in 2009, has rapidly risen to 21 percent in 2010. In other words, serious bacterial infection in the 1/5 of the patients has been incurable.
The management is not only against fungi drugs thunder and the rain is not small. The introduction of a series of specific and control indicators, two, three medical institutions in the use of antibiotics intended to limiting the varieties comprehensive measures to limit the amount of the limit level, clearly defined the three hospitals with the principles of antimicrobial resveratrol agents varieties shall not exceed 50 kinds, the two hospitals not more than 35 kinds. Varieties of the same generic name drugs, the injectable formulation and the oral formulation of not more than two kinds, the prescription form similar compound 1-2. Drugs may not be repeated with the same or similar pharmaceutical characteristics procurement. Standing point of view of about 90 kinds of antimicrobial agents from the current three-level hospital in limited varieties will enable the hospital antimicrobial agents reduce the number of nearly half, so a lot of antibiotics will be refused admission to hospital outside the gate.
The experts say China has a tradition of using Chinese medicine. Thousands of years Chinese herbal medicine practice has confirmed that many Chinese herbs such as viola, radix, lobelia, dandelion has anti-inflammatory antimicrobial effect. In the situation of antibiotics restrictions, using Chinese herbal medicine to treat infectious diseases will become a mainstream.Source:

Naturopathic medicine

Naturopathic medicine has been described as “any of various systems of healing or treating disease (as chiropractic, homeopathy, or faith healing) not included in the traditional medical curricula taught in the United States and Britain”.

A major objection to naturopathic medicine is that it is done in place of conventional medical treatments. As long as naturopathic treatments are used alongside conventional treatments, the majority of medical doctors find most forms of complementary medicine acceptable.

Advocates of naturopathic medicine hold that naturopathic medicine may provide health benefits through patient empowerment, by offering more choices to the public, including treatments that are simply not available in conventional medicine.

Advocates of naturopathic medicine hold that the various naturopathic treatment methods are effective in treating a wide range of major and minor medical conditions, and contend that recently published research proves the effectiveness of specific naturopathic treatments.

Although advocates of naturopathic medicine acknowledge that the placebo effect may play a role in the benefits that some receive from naturopathic therapies, they point out that this does not diminish their validity. Researchers who judge treatments using the scientific method are concerned by this viewpoint, since it fails to address the possible inefficacy of naturopathic treatments.

If a naturopathic medical approach, initially regarded as untested, is subsequently shown to be safe and effective, it may then be adopted by conventional practitioners and no longer considered “naturopathic”.

It is advisable for patients to inform their medical doctor when they are using naturopathic medicine, because some naturopathic treatments may interact with orthodox medical treatments, and such potential conflicts should be explored in the interest of the patient. However, many conventional practitioners are biased or uninformed about naturopathics, and patients are often reluctant to share this information with their medical doctors since they fear it will hurt their doctor-patient relationship.

Most Americans who consult naturopathic providers would probably jump at the chance to consult a physician who is well trained in scientifically based medicine and who is also open-minded and knowledgeable about the body’s innate mechanisms of healing, the role of lifestyle factors in influencing health, and the appropriate uses of dietary supplements, herbs, and other forms of treatment, from osteopathic manipulation to Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.

People want competent help in navigating the confusing maze of therapeutic options that are available today, especially in those cases in which conventional approaches are relatively ineffective or harmful.

Naturopathic medicine practices are often based in belief systems not derived from modern science. Naturopathic medicines may therefore incorporate spiritual, metaphysical, or religious underpinnings, untested practices, non-Western medical traditions, or newly developed approaches to healing.

The issue of naturopathic medicine interfering with conventional medical practices is minimized when it is turned to only after conventional treatments have been exhausted. Many patients feel that naturopathic medicine may help in coping with chronic illnesses for which conventional medicine offers no cure, only management. Over time, it has become more common for a patient’s own MD to suggest naturopathics when they cannot offer effective treatment.

The large variety of equipment means that the facility needs to be larger than the average clinic. Some of these specialists have rooms, which are attached to their original clinic that gives them access to the plethora of equipment that they might need.

Basically, sports medicine doctors deal with a variety of injuries that may need input from other medical fields. Physical therapists are among the associates that may be called to deal with an injury. They also deal primarily with the patient’s bones, muscles, and joints. Both specialists need to cooperate in order to help the player get back to his usual form. Some diagnoses and treatments may be more in the line of work of the physical therapist than the medical doctor and vice versa. Whichever the case, the medical doctor who is assigned to the team is usually called upon to make the diagnosis and then may recommend a visit to the physical therapist.

Some of these professionals work for major athletic teams where they follow the club on the road in order to be available at all times. This is a lucrative and exciting field and these are just some examples of the work environment that sports medicine doctors usually perform in.

Medicare Advantage Will Get Hit With Health Care Reform

Since even before Medicare was passed in 1965 its been a source of frustration and intense debate from The Hill to Main Street. From concierge doctors to family physicians, politicians and family gatherings, health care reform is still a tough subject to grasp.

While Andy Griffith is currently appearing in television ads explaining Medicare changes to seniors, and the White House is praising its upcoming health care overhaul, the facts of how Medicare will change still remain a bit fuzzy.

1965. A lot of good things came out that year, like Medicare. This year, like always, we’ll have our guaranteed benefits and, with the new health care law, more good things are coming. Free checkups. Lower prescription costs and better ways to protect us and Medicare from fraud. See what else is new. I think you’re gonna like it, says Andy Griffith in his new TV ad. (Time.com) Seems to be pretty simply and explanatory, right? In reality, its a little more complicated.

Time.com states that Medicare Advantage, will in fact be greatly affected by health care reform, causing many seniors who have Medicare Advantage plans to lose fringe benefits that are not required by law. According to the Wall Street Journal, dozens of Medicare Advantage providers plan to cut back vision, dental and prescription benefits. Some plans are eliminating free teeth cleanings and gym memberships, and raising fees for hearing aids, eye glasses and emergency-room visits.

Medicare Advantage plans will take the biggest hit when the health care overhaul starts to take effect next month, mainly because Medicare Advantage plans are privately run plans that offer additional benefits beyond traditional Medicare. Obamas health care overhaul cuts to Medicare Advantage will open up the doors for 30 million Americans who currently dont have health insurance c overage. By taking some funding away from Medicare Advantage, money can be put towards those 30 million uninsured.

Democrats say the payment cuts are fair because Medicare overpays private insurers to run the plans. The government now pays private insurance companies an average of 9% more to operate the plans than it costs the government to run traditional Medicare, according to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, an independent congressional agency. That allows insurers to offer richer benefits to enrollees. (Wall Street Journal Online)

As for standard Medicare plans, they will not change, a common misconception among seniors according to Time.com. In a July poll, 50% of seniors believed health care reform would cut benefits that were previously provided to all people on Medicare, and that Medicare patients will have to spend more out of their own pocket. The reality is that while Medicare Advantage will change dramatically, standard Medicare will not, according to Time.com.

The law requires Medicare to pay 100% of preventive care, which includes checkups. The law will also gradually close the Medicare prescription drug gap known as the doughnut hole.
